School of Medicine names Watson as chair of Neurology

David Watson, MD David Watson, M.D., has been named to lead the WVU School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology. Dr. Watson, associate professor and headache specialist, has been serving as interim chair of the department for more than a year.

Watson serves as the director of the WVU Headache Center. His clinical work focuses on patients with headache disorders, including migraine and cluster, as well as access to clinical care in underserved populations. He has also been active in clinical research focused on new treatment options for headache patients. He earned his medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine and completed a residency in Neurology and a fellowship in Headache Medicine at the University of North Carolina.

“During his tenure as interim chair, Dr. Watson has facilitated the growth and progress of the Department of Neurology,” Ali Rezai, MD, executive chair, associate dean and vice president of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. “We are thrilled to work with Dr. Watson in his new role as the chair of the Department of Neurology to advance the clinical, research and educational efforts at the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and throughout West Virginia.”

Watson is a member of the Government Relations Committee of the American Academy of Neurology and formerly served as the chair of the Grassroots Working Group. He founded and chairs Runnin’ For Research, a charitable organization dedicated to headache and migraine disorders research. He has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Palatucci Advocate of the Year award in 2017 by the American Academy of Neurology.

In addition to his clinical work, Watson is involved with resident and student education at all levels and serves as advisor for the student interest group in Neurology. Watson will fill the post previously held by John Brick, M.D.
